The musical repertoire of AN CAT DUBH ranges from celtic traditionals, played in fresh and modern arrangements, to original material with an unconfusably own style. The greater part of the program consists of self-written material, since the members set great store by individuality.
Lyrically AN CAT DUBH's songs deal with the same topics many of the traditional Irish songs and ballads do - famine, war, emigration, exploitation, unemployment, the Northern Ireland conflict and revolt against British repression. If you think all of this is much to melancholic or even melodramatic, you'll find the typical Irish-Scottish songs about love, loneliness and drinking as well as some celtic mythology influenced lyrics a welcome relief. All in all its a well balanced program which perfectly represents the band's name and their musical style: lyrics as black as Guinness, ballads as quiet as velvet paws and "rockers" as sharp as claws.
Seit 1992 spielt An Cat Dubh, die im Celtic-Folk-Rock-Bereich etablierte Darmstädter Band, die Lieder aus den irischen Pubs, die Shantys der rauen Seeleute und die alten keltischen Balladen, die sie neu arrangiert und zeitgemäß interpretiert.
Die Band zeichnet sich durch ihre musikalische Offenheit und Spannweite aus. In melodiebetonten Acoustic Rock Songs verarbeiten sie die verschiedensten Elemente und untermalen das ganze mit viel Spielfreude. Das Repertoire der fünf schwarzen Kater (An Cat Dubh = gälisch: die schwarze Katze) umfasst neben traditionellen Stücken zahlreiche handgemachte Eigenkompositionen und -interpretationen, eine Mixtur aus eingängigen Rockelementen, gepaart mit irischen und schottischen Einflüssen.
